Best Buy Wants to Broaden Their Gaming Influence

Are you tired of being hassled at GameStop and the lack of knowledge of Wal-Mart electronics associates.  Well, Best Buy, which currently ranks third behind both of them in video games sales, has decided to put an emphasis on the video game department.  Coming soon to each of the big-box electronics retailer’s stores will be an enlarged gaming area that will be filled with “knowledgeable” associates.  A new staff will be hired that is dedicated and informed focusing only on gaming.  Best Buy senior VP Chris Homeister discussed what the company calls a “gaming transformation” as part of a “drive toward number one industry position” in the game software market.

This new section will be completely rebuilt in each store.  New sales counters, bigger selection, and more space will be added to increase the game buying ambiance. This will probably come at the cost of losing some of the music section that has had declining sales.  Each employee will be handling sales, trade-ins, questions, and the dreaded pre-orders.  They will, of course, have the “exclusive DLC.”   The mantra for this new department is to create a “virtuous cycle of game buying.”  One big difference from other retailers is the ability to use trade-in credits to purchase other items in the store.

The changes in the video game department are planned for the fiscal year 2012 which will end in February.  Be on the look out for changes in your local store, and see if GameStop may have a real competitor.

The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile Demo

Colorful FPS coming to XBLA This Summer

On April 13, TikGames announced a new first-person shooter for the Xbox Live Arcade. Coming to XBLA this summer is Xotic. It will be rated T for Teen.  The game is being developed by WXP Games and co-published by TikGames and Valcon Games.  Xotic will uniquely blend the FPS with an arcade feel.  Anatoly Tikhman, Founder and CEO of TikGames stated, “Instead of running around and shooting the same old soldiers with the same old guns, in this game players will be exploring a unique bio-organic environment while aiming to rack up millions of points and a spot at the top of the leaderboards.”  Social integration will be a big part of the game.  You will instantly be able to see how well your friend did during the game.

Instead of the drab, dreary wastelands that we are getting a little too accustomed to, Xotic will use color and organics to brighten our lives.  The player will use the organic settings as apart of combos and scoring.  You will need to shoot the enemies, but also parts of the environment while attaining best times to shoot up the leaderboards.  As you work your way to the top of the leaderboards, you will also be upgrading your skills and weapons.

“I think players will be surprised by the creativity and uniqueness of Xotic,” said Patrick Moynihan, Studio Director of WXP Games. “There isn’t another shooter like Xotic, with its blend of FPS action and arcade-style compulsion towards achieving ever-higher scores.”

Now’s Not the Time – A 3DS Perspective

The Nintendo 3DS has hit the shelves here in the United States.  Complete with a $250 price tag and 16 games at $40 a pop.  All of the above comes with complimentary migraines for some.  The tech is cool, but the need is lacking.   Those who use older electronics seem to be left behind.   But you are left behind with the biggest selling game device in history by having a regular DS.  Nintendo has been the first to get glasses-less 3D on the market, and it seems like every electronics company is pushing 3D on us.  The 3D does work, but what is it going to do to some people’s eyesight?  Many stories are starting to come out about bad experiences with the 3D.

A New Wii?

According to Gameinformer sources, there will be a new console coming from Nintendo.  Sources say that Nintendo will make some announcement concerning the console either a little before or at E3.  Gameinformer was able to confirm that this successor would be HD enable.  This has been one of the biggest knocks against the current Wii.  Although it will be HD, there have been conflicting reports on how much power the machine will actually contain.  It is unknown if the new console will be below, equal to, or above current consoles such as the PS3 and Xbox 360.  The move to HD should help the portfolio of games for Nintendo consoles become more robust, rather than the lackluster games that have been associated with the Wii.

The Humble Indie Bundle Is BACK

The concept is easy. Offer great games from independent developers, and let you name the price. How much better can this get? It gets a lot better. The money goes to charity. An amazing concept that was created by Wolfire Games’ John Graham and Jeffery Rosen, has raised over $2.8 million dollars with their previous two bundles. Back for its third iteration, The Humble Frozenbyte Bundle offers 4 games from Frozenbyte that would normally retail for around $50. The games are Trine, Shadowgrounds, Shadowgrounds: Survivor, and Splot. You can choose to put your money towards Child’s Play, Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Humble Indie Bundle or Frozenbyte.  Money can be equally divided or distributed any way you see fit. Don’t delay, the offer is only good until April 26. Take advantage of the offer to get some good games and help out a few good charities.
